Kallumakkaya Fry / Kerala Style Mussels Fry
Ingredients needed to make Kallumakkaya Fry / Kerala Style Mussels Fry:
2-3lbs Mussels / Kallumakkaya ( refer *notes )
1 Onion, finely chopped
2tbsp Garlic, finely chopped
Curry Leaves
1cup Coconut Flakes/pieces
1tbsp Chilli Powder
1/2tsp Turmeric Powder
1tbsp Black Pepper Powder
1tbsp Garam Masala
Salt
Coconut Oil
Method:
Heat some Coconut Oil in a pan and add Onion, Garlic and Curry Leaves.
Saute until Onions turn light golden brown in color.
Add Chilli,Turmeric, Black Pepper and Garam Masala.
Saute until raw smell is gone.
Carefully add Mussels / Kallumakkaya and Coconut flakes, mix everything together.
On medium low flame fry Mussels until its dried and fried according to your taste.
Serve Kallumakkaya Fry / Kerala Style Mussels Fry hot with Rice.

*Notes:
Kallumakkaya Fry / Kerala Style Mussels Fry is one of my favorite dishes of all time. It’s the best side dish or appetizer to be served with booze/drinks.
I got cooked and frozen Mussels from a local store near my home.
Before cooking frozen Mussels, try to thaw. If there’s any liquid try to dry it out as much as you can using kitchen tissue.
While cooking you can see a lot of water coming out from Mussels, make sure to keep the flame in high and allow all the liquid to evaporate. Don’t forget to stir occasionally.
Always adjust Chilli and Black Pepper Powder according to your taste.
